Rodney Shaw's extensive background and training combine to create a fine sculptor. His subject matter is predominately female and figurative. He works in the pale beautifully colored terracotta. He uses the colors manganese, ochre, iron oxide, and a small touch of blue and green. By the standards of contemporary sculpture, whose coloring seems to reflect a broad desire for boldness, these pieces are mighty subtle. The base color is definitely terracotta pink, but the modulation mimics the glow of real flesh. It is quite effective, especially if you have a sneaking fondness for calming beauty.
