Rob
Hynes
Born
in Chicago in 1964, Rob Hynes began his career in the Culinary Arts. After
attending Loyola University of Chicago for the three years, he earned
an AOS in Culinary Art from Johnson and Wales University- Providence in
1988 and a BS in Foodservice Management at Kendall College, Evanston,
Illinois (1989). At Kendall, while in pursuit of the degree, Hynes worked
both as a Teaching Assistant and a Chef.
His life took a turn when he moved to
the North Carolina Mountains in 1989. Following stints at one of Asheville's
best restaurants, a bakery or two, and an "all-ages" nightclub,
he became Head Chef at the Penland School of Handicrafts in 1990 where
he worked until 1994. At Penland he was exposed to a variety of media
and began experimenting in glass, paint, metals, and music.
Primarily self-taught in glass design
and painting, Hynes worked as Katherine and William Bernstein's studio
assistant from 1994 until 1998. He is currently building his own glass
studio. Hynes' own work expresses his interest in the sensual qualities
of the fiery and colorful medium of glass. In a recent collection titled
the Landscape Beaker Series, the vessels seem to exist in a state between
liquid and solid, between molten and cool.
In his own words, Hynes describes the
process as, "…capturing the sensual phantasm of the hot medium, the
chemistry. The finished piece then, is for the viewer to hold, observe,
and enjoy at Earthly temperatures."
