Joanne Geisel

As a child, Joanne loved to draw and started painting in oils at an early age.  After receiving a bachelor’s degree in art education, she worked in human service and higher educational occupations, where she used her creative skills to help people reach their personal goals.  In 2005, Joanne was able to fulfill one of her lifelong dreams of being a full time artist when she moved to Leland, NC with her husband and daughter.

Joanne has been teaching beginning and intermediate students in classes and workshops for the past five years in the Wilmington area. As she prefers to teach from life, Joanne has taught students to paint still life, plein air landscapes and portraits. Her paintings have won numerous awards. She exhibits in regional galleries and her work is held in a number of corporate and personal collections.

Artist Statement:
“Painting landscapes and the human figure directly from nature is what I enjoy most. Painting landscapes en plein air is endlessly fascinating due to the discovery of beautiful locations, the careful, constant observation that is required and the challenge of adding one's unique perspective. Drawing and painting a model, capturing his or her mood and energy through line, and color is a joyful, intriguing experience. Also, being able to teach provides another venue for personal learning, and sharing knowledge and appreciation. This combination of creating art and teaching has provided impetus for artistic growth and development.”

Education:
Marist College, MPA 1983
SUNY New Paltz, graduate studies in art and education, permanent certification in art education, 1978
SUNY College at New Paltz, B.S. Art Education, 1973
Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, Fashion major, 1968-69
