Valerie and Richard Beck
The husband and wife team of Valerie and Richard Beck work in blown glass to create objects of beauty and function. They have taught at the Penland School of Craft in North Carolina throughout their long career. They live and work in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Their glass ornaments incorporate Murrini designs, based on an ancient Roman design. Layers of colored glass are heated, shaped and stretched into long canes. Thin cross-sections of this are then cut creating the murrinis. These opaque murrinis are incorporated into the translucent glass during the process of blowing, creating the patterns you see in the finished blown ball.
